A quick review of Field Notes Notebooks ...
As a lover of fountain pens and journals, I'm always happy to get either in the mail.
Yesterday the mailman brought me the latest care package from our friends at Field Notes. The package includes:
* Three 48-page memo books.
* Each 3-1/2″ wide by 5-1/2″ tall.
* Rugged three-staple saddle-stitch process.
* Perfect 1-pica-graphed paper.
* Pencil, Bic Clic Pen & other goodies.
The web site also states that all are made in the U.S.A. As of this writing the entire package is only $9.95 + shipping.
The pencil, calendar and sticker are a nice touch. The graph paper is a good all-around pattern from writing notes or drawing.
But the first thing I wanted to do was crack open the notebooks and see how the paper responded to fountain pen and other ink. In my bag I had four writing tools and tried them all:
* Faber-Castell E-Motion mechanical pencil
* Lamy Dialog2 Roller Ball pen
* Pelikan M800 fountain pen, F nib
* Uni-ball Signo 207 pen
There was no noticeable feathering or bleed-thru from the fountain pen, and the others all looked fine.

I also like the sense of humor these guys have, the inside front and back covers are worth a chuckle or two.
The inside front cover states: "Hence, there is/isn't a handsome reward waiting." With appropriate check boxes.
The inside back cover lists many ways in which the Field Notes notebooks can be used, including:

- Shoddy Sketches
- Half-Ass Calculations (maybe should be 'Half-Assed'?)
- Hate Mail
- Escape Routes
- Illegible Autographs
- Shady Transactions
- Treasure Maps

In short, grab a few of these, they're affordable, solid (3 staples), take fountain pen ink well, and can easily slip into a shirt, jacket, or jeans back pocket.

Great review! I've been drooling over these for a while, but I didn't know they came with the cool old-school pen. I think I have to get some and soon:)

I feel I should note this: Although 'only' $9.95, if you order these books from the website, the postage and handling is excessive. My final total exceeded $15 for just one 3-pack of 3x5 books. Not cool.
