New York's Per-Pupil Spending Ranks Highest In U.S.

Hey, but at least we're getting our money's worth, right?! Errrrr ... Be sure to click on the pic at right to see full-size. (pic via Cato)

If you said, "I believe in the separation of church and state," most Americans would agree completely. But if you said, "For the same reasons, I believe in the separation of school and state and the separation of healthcare and state," most Americans would consider you a kook. Go figure.
-- Dr. Robert Higgs
New York's per-pupil spending ranks highest in U.S .- Democrat and Chronicle: "ALBANY — New York spent $17,173 per student for public education in 2007-08, more than any other state and 67 percent more than the U.S. average, according to Census Bureau statistics released Monday. In Monroe County, schools spent about 17 percent less than the state average, according to the census numbers. Jody Siegle, executive director of the county School Boards Association, said it's no surprise that schools here spend less than the statewide figure. "Districts here do a tremendous amount across district lines to save money and that affects the cost per pupil," she said. Among those cost-saving measures, she said, are insurance collectives, joint purchasing agreements and shared services. The $10,259 average nationally — $6,914 less than New York's — was a 6 percent increase over 2006-07, the Census Bureau said. New York's spending went up 7.4 percent over the period."

Today's Quotes: von Mises, Lawrence, & Carden

[E]conomic history is a long record of government policies that failed because
they were designed with a bold disregard for the laws of economics.
-- Ludwig von Mises.

Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought
up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grand-children are
once more slaves.
-- D. H. Lawrence (1885-1938), 1915

A healthy civilization is one in which voluntary and commercial relationships
between people are maximized while coercive and political relationships between
them are minimized.
-- Art Carden

Liberty & Govt. At Work: Govt. Corruption, Voter Intimidation, Water, & More

Some VERY unsettling news, not sure what's worse, the voter intimidation story or the Afghanistan corruption story.

Afghan Hawalas Transfer Billions Out of Country - WSJ.com: "KABUL—More than $3 billion in cash has been openly flown out of Kabul International Airport in the past three years, a sum so large that U.S. investigators believe top Afghan officials and their associates are sending billions of diverted U.S. aid and logistics dollars and drug money to financial safe havens abroad. The cash—packed into suitcases, piled onto pallets and loaded into airplanes—is declared and legal to move. But U.S. and Afghan officials say they are targeting the flows in major anticorruption and drug trafficking investigations because of their size relative to Afghanistan's small economy and the murkiness of their origins."

Congressman Ron Paul - The Military Can Waste Money Too: "This past week various news events once again made it abundantly clear that our foreign policy is an abject failure. Unfortunately, in spite of this the administration is determined to stay on this destructive course, despite any past promises to change it. For Afghanistan especially, if ever there was an opportunity to admit shortcomings and change strategies along with leaders, this past week was it."

Inside the Black Panther case - Washington Times: "On the day President Obama was elected, armed men wearing the black berets and jackboots of the New Black Panther Party were stationed at the entrance to a polling place in Philadelphia. They brandished a weapon and intimidated voters and poll watchers. After the election, the Justice Department brought a voter-intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party and those armed thugs. I and other Justice attorneys diligently pursued the case and obtained an entry of default after the defendants ignored the charges. Before a final judgment could be entered in May 2009, our superiors ordered us to dismiss the case. The New Black Panther case was the simplest and most obvious violation of federal law I saw in my Justice Department career. Because of the corrupt nature of the dismissal, statements falsely characterizing the case and, most of all, indefensible orders for the career attorneys not to comply with lawful subpoenas investigating the dismissal, this month I resigned my position as a Department of Justice (DOJ) attorney."

Out of the Mouths of Investment Managers - The Beacon: "There are no lines of would-be immigrants rushing to enter Venezuela or Cuba. Both countries are abject, socialist states. The U.S. is at the other end of the spectrum in terms of the existence of economic and political liberty, but it is far from the bastion of economic liberty it was in previous decades. The damage inflicted upon individual liberty and the private economy by attacks on capitalism and the growth of socialism become evident only in degrees and over time."

Municipal water loss is pouring dollars down the drain - Democrat and Chronicle: "As Rochester residents brace for an increase in water rates, nearly one in four gallons of water treated for consumption never reaches the tap because it is lost in an aging distribution system that drains about 2.6 billion gallons annually, city water records show. The leakage represents 24 percent, or 7.1 million gallons, of the city's daily water supply — enough to fill 10 Olympic-size swimming pools a day with hundreds of thousands of gallons to spare. By comparison, the Monroe County Water Authority last year lost about 7.7 million gallons a day — about 15 percent — in a system that processes almost twice as much water for three times as many customers and contains five times as many miles of pipe."

Always Good To See Hayek Getting Recognition ...

No not THAT Hayek, I mean the talented one. ;-)

Russ Roberts on F.A. Hayek in yesterday's WSJ.

Russ Roberts: Hayek: An Economist's Comeback - WSJ.com: "With the failure of Keynesian stimulus, the late Austrian economist's ideas on state power and crony capitalism are getting a new hearing. ... He was born in the 19th century, wrote his most influential book more than 65 years ago, and he's not quite as well known or beloved as the sexy Mexican actress who shares his last name. Yet somehow, Friedrich Hayek is on the rise. When Glenn Beck recently explored Hayek's classic, "The Road to Serfdom," on his TV show, the book went to No. 1 on Amazon and remains in the top 10. Hayek's persona co-starred with his old sparring partner John Maynard Keynes in a rap video "Fear the Boom and Bust" that has been viewed over 1.4 million times on YouTube and subtitled in 10 languages. Why the sudden interest in the ideas of a Vienna-born, Nobel Prize-winning economist largely forgotten by mainstream economists? ... Hayek understood that the opposite of top-down collectivism was not selfishness and egotism. A free modern society is all about cooperation. We join with others to produce the goods and services we enjoy, all without top-down direction. The same is true in every sphere of activity that makes life meaningful—when we sing and when we dance, when we play and when we pray. Leaving us free to join with others as we see fit—in our work and in our play—is the road to true and lasting prosperity. Hayek gave us that map. Despite the caricatures of his critics, Hayek never said that totalitarianism was the inevitable result of expanding government's role in the economy. He simply warned us of the possibility and the costs of heading in that direction. We should heed his warning. I don't know if we're on the road to serfdom, but wherever we're headed, Hayek would certainly counsel us to turn around."

Wristwatch Updates: Liquidmetal, Autavia, Greubel Forsey, & More!

I love this new Zenith. Many other great things to see, too! (pic via aBlogToRead)

Zenith El Primero Foudroyante Chronograph 1/10 Second Watch: "What is really cool about foudroyante watches is what I call the 'crazy seconds hand.' The hand in the dial that is used to measure the fraction of a second moves like mad around the dial when the chronograph is operating."

MCT Sequential One All Black – A Wow Watch Wednesday Exclusive! - The Watch Lounge: "Think of one of the most unique, innovative and just down-right cool timepieces you have ever seen and then imagine it dressed in all black. That’s exactly what super exclusive luxury watch-maker Manufacture Contemporaine du Temps (MCT) have done and the result, the all new Sequential One All Black, is nothing short of superb."

OceanicTime: PORSCHE DESIGN & ETERNA (interview): "OceanicTime Could you explain briefly about the special relationship that Porsche Design and Eterna have, how it came about and as far as development of Porsche Design timepieces are concerned (specifically dive watches) who does what?
PORSCHE DESIGN Patrick Schwarz: This is a unique relationship because Eterna is the licensee for Porsche Design watches and it is also owned by the Porsche family."

Seiko Ananta Spring Drive Titanium Chronograph GMT Watch: "Titanium offers a new look and feel for Ananta. The weight of the watch is very light. Amazingly so actually. While the steel Ananta watches aren't exactly heavy given their size, the titanium case and bracelet feel like the steel model would if it was on the moon."

A BNIB Universal Geneve Polerouter From The 1950s: Are We Kidding? Nope, We're Not. - Hodinkee: "Currently for sale on eBay is nothing short of a spectacular new old stock stainless steel Polerouter with an original box (a Polerouter Date box that perhaps was accidentally included by the retailer at the time of purchase), papers, stickers, and tags. It appears to be from the later 1950s."

Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 3 Watch Hands-On: "Inside the 43mm wide watch is a complex manually wound mechanical movement comprised of 370 parts - each with a really nice level of polish and decoration. Movement has 72 hours of power reserve as well. A few sapphire exhibition windows around the case help you appreciate it."

Musings on Peter Speake-Marins amazing SM2 inhouse caliber and more... : "I ordered my Piccadilly in 2003 (steel with a gorgeous frosted dial) sight unseen. When I picked up the watch at Basel the following year (at the time Peter did not have ADs) I was flabbergasted: the watch was even more stunning than in the photos and that was a tough deed."

The Heuer Autavia Diver: Little Known, Massively Respected. - Hodinkee: "The Heuer Autavia makes a great retro chronograph. They are a good size, they are mostly automatics (some even Cal 11's), and the majority of them feature some great funky 1970s coloring on the dial or hands. Best of all, you can buy a Viceroy or similar Autavia for under $2000, making it a pretty spectacular entry level vintage chrono."

OMEGA Watches: Liquidmetal: When OMEGA launched its Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal® Limited Edition, the world was introduced to the very first watch to bond ceramics and Liquidmetal®, a zirconium-based alloy."

Markets In Everything: White Guys?

Not even sure what to say.

Rent a White Guy - Magazine - The Atlantic: "Not long ago I was offered work as a quality-control expert with an American company in China I’d never heard of. No experience necessary—which was good, because I had none. I’d be paid $1,000 for a week, put up in a fancy hotel, and wined and dined in Dongying, an industrial city in Shandong province I’d also never heard of. The only requirements were a fair complexion and a suit. “I call these things ‘White Guy in a Tie’ events,” a Canadian friend of a friend named Jake told me during the recruitment pitch he gave me in Beijing, where I live. “Basically, you put on a suit, shake some hands, and make some money. We’ll be in ‘quality control,’ but nobody’s gonna be doing any quality control. You in?”"

Liberty & Govt. At Work: Carp Czars, Lobbyists, Taliban, & More

A Carp Czar? Really? How does Durbin have a shred of credibility left? (furiously flipping through my copy of the Constitution for a mention of this ...)

Durbin asks Obama to appoint carp czar - Chicago Breaking News: "As concerns mount about the presence of Asian carp near Lake Michigan, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin today urged President Obama to appoint a carp czar to oversee efforts to keep the invasive species out of the Great Lakes."

6-Year-Old Northeast Ohio Girl on 'No Fly' List - WJW: "WESTLAKE, Ohio - Alyssa Thomas, 6, is a little girl who is already under the spotlight of the federal government. Her family recently discovered that Alyssa is on the 'no fly' list maintained by U.S. Homeland Security."

Obama calls for bank tax as next step in reform - Reuters: "(Reuters) - President Barack Obama, fresh from a win on a sweeping overhaul of Wall Street regulations, on Saturday urged Congress to take up his proposal for a $90 billion, 10-year tax on banks as the next step in reform."

Gov. Schwarzenegger halts use of welfare debit cards at casinos - The Desert Sun: "Spurred by a newspaper's report that California's welfare debit cards can be used to withdraw cash in more than half the casinos in the state, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday issued an immediate ban on state-provided cash assistance at ATMs in gambling establishments."

Free Speech Watch - John Stossel: "Yesterday, the House passed the DISCLOSE Act, making good on the President's promise to ignore the Supreme Court's ruling and pass laws that abridge the freedom of speech. In Citizens United, the Supremes ruled that laws banning any group of citizens from engaging in political speech is unconstitutional. That includes unions, corporations, and interest groups both big and small. Instead of passing new restrictions on the political speech of all those groups, Democrats chose to ram through a bill that only burdens some, with special exemptions for labor unions and big well-connected lobbyists, like the NRA."

Taliban’s Time Horizon Longer Than America’s: The Independent Institute: "In contrast to World War II and Desert Storm—which had clear goals, even though those of the latter were limited—the war in Afghanistan resembles the Spanish-American War and the Vietnam War. In the former, the goal changed from defeating the Spanish in a conventional war to subduing Philippine guerrillas in order to imperially conquer the archipelago. In the latter, contrary to popular belief, Lyndon Johnson’s goal was never to win, but to alter the conditions on the battlefield to compel the enemy to negotiate."

Where’s Your Lobbyist? - John Stossel: "As Washington grows, lobbyists become more important. Now that Congress has passed a burdensome, 2000- page financial overhaul bill, lobbyists will be busier than ever. The bill creates – among other things – a new “Consumer Protection Agency”. Obama said today ..."

Taking A Few Days Off ...

Spending some time w/ the family, see you on Tuesday! ;-)

Today's Quotes: von Mises, Mencken, Bastiat, & More!

Ever since its founding in 1913, the Fed has described itself as an
"independent" agency operated by selfless public servants striving to
"fine-tune" the economy through monetary policy. In reality, however, a
non-political governmental institution is as likely as a barking cat.
-- Thomas J. DiLorenzo

History has witnessed the failure of many endeavors to impose peace by war,
cooperation by coercion, unanimity by slaughtering dissidents.... A lasting
order cannot be established by bayonets.
-- Ludwig von Mises, Omnipotent Government [1944]

The American people, North and South, went into the [Civil] war as citizens
of their respective states, they came out as subjects ... what they thus
lost they have never got back.
-- H.L. Mencken

"...for that nothing doth more hurt in a state, than that cunning men pass for
wise."
-- Francis Bacon
(1561-1626) Philosopher, British Lord Chancellor

See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to
other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one
citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot
do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay, for it
is not only an evil itself, but also it is a fertile source for further
evils because it invites reprisals.
-- Frédéric Bastiat

Love that Patek. This JLC is amazing. (pic courtesy of Jorge@TZ)

INDUSTRY NEWS - Jaeger-LeCoultre Heritage Gallery: "The “sound system” of its minute repeater mechanism represents the culmination of several years of acoustic research and features articulated hammers striking square-section “cathedral” gong-rings made from a secret alloy and generating a sound that is amplified by the sapphire crystal protecting the watch dial."

Technically this is the same watch as the PAM359 that I posted previously. In terms of looks it is completely different watch."

New to me ...Vintage and Modern - Rolex: "I received two new packages in the mail this week... I have been wanting something that I would not be worried about puting in the water for some time and just could not bring myself to buying something modern but this 14060m really intrigues me as being the modern 4 line 5512."

PROFESSIONAL WATCHES™ Close-up: Maurice de Mauriac Chrono Modern DLC: "It has a Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement that was sourced from the Swatch division's ETA movement factory, like so many other brands. But, not many brands allow you to decide so many different elements that effect how your watch looks and feels, instead you pick from a few different models and color variations? That's it."

Fountain Pens & Writing Updates: Rhodia, J. Herbin, Uni-Ball, & More

So many thing to check out. I really want to get my hands on that Uni-Ball 207 Needle Tip. (pic via PenAddict)

The Pen Addict: Review: Uni-Ball Signo 207 0.7mm Needle Tip: "With all of the Uni-Ball Signo 207 pens I have laying around the house (I'm guessing at least a dozen in various flavors), I was surprised to realize I have only ever reviewed one of them on The Pen Addict previously. Along with the Pilot G-2 and the Pentel Energel, the 207 rounds out the trinity of the most popular gel pens on the shelves."

Ink Nouveau: inkswabsinkswabsINKSWABS!!!!: "While most dads were watching the US Open or drinking beer while manning the grill, I was doing ink swabs for every ink I have on hand. That's right, over 170 ink swabs on both white and ivory paper. Technically, it was over 400 swabs. Whew! But I did it for you all, because I want to try to bridge the gap as much as possible from the ink in my hands to what you see with your eyes."

Conway Stewart Collector's Club June 2010 "Meet a member of the Conway Stewart Team -- Louis Emery": "I rejoined Conway Stewart in November 2009. As you may have noticed there, this is not the first time I have worked for Conway Stewart."

La Plume Etoile - J. Herbin Rose Tendresse: "Saturated, yet gentle, like all other Herbin inks. I first tried Rose Tendresse in a Reform 1745 and it was VERY dry. I now have it loaded in my pink Esterbrook (!) and have used it with a 2314-M nib and a modified 1555 Gregg nib."

The Perfect Pair - Rhodia and a 616: "So this addiction usually runs in waves. Meaning...if I like a pen and paper combo, I will stick with until it runs the course and I move on to the next journal or pen or even ink if needed."

Unposted: The Roadbook: "What is it about 'The Road' that people are so fascinated with? Why does it call some people and not others?"

Lamy Studio Stainless Steel Body Extra Fine Fountain Pen :: OfficeSupplyGeek: "When I buy a “nice” pen, I usually like to try something new, but in the case of the Lamy Studio, I liked the first one that I bought so much, that I decided I wanted a second one. The only thing I didn’t love about my old Lamy Studio was the fact that the grip section was a shiny chrome finish ..."

16 inks with the blues - lady dandelion: "The last post featured 15 red/red leaning inks. I got so inspired by doing it that I pulled out all my blues – some of them samples provided by kind friends – and made a colour chart."

Rothbard Explains Markets, Surpluses, and Shortages

For now, ignore the discussion of Carter and government policy. I think the latter part of this piece that discusses how markets work is fantastic. And remember, there can be no logical talk of the concepts of surpluses or shortage without including prices in the discussion.

Carter's Energy Fascism - Murray N. Rothbard: "Is there an 'energy shortage,' and are Carter's draconian measures necessary to alleviate it? Here, we must point to a vital distinction that lies at the heart of economic science: between 'scarcity' and a 'shortage.' Not only are all forms of energy scarce, but all goods and services, without exception, are scarce as well. That is, people could always use more of them if available. We have always lived in a world of scarcity for all goods, and we always will, short of the Garden of Eden; economic development over the centuries has consisted in making goods relatively less scarce than heretofore. The test of whether or not any good or service is scarce is very simple: is its price greater than zero? If it is, then it is scarce. Happily, air is not scarce, and so its price on the market is zero (although this is not true of conditioned air.)"

When Does Sympathy Become Counter-Productive?

What Are the causes of poverty? Again, the wrong question. There are no "causes" of poverty, it is the original, natural state. A much better question would be "what are the causes of prosperity?" That is a much more rare and elusive end. The column below is fantastic.

Socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it.
-- Dr. Thomas Sowell

Sympathy Deformed by Theodore Dalrymple, City Journal Spring 2010: "Misguided compassion hurts the poor. To sympathize with those who are less fortunate is honorable and decent. A man able to commiserate only with himself would surely be neither admirable nor attractive. But every virtue can become deformed by excess, insincerity, or loose thinking into an opposing vice. Sympathy, when excessive, moves toward sentimental condescension and eventually disdain; when insincere, it becomes unctuously hypocritical; and when associated with loose thinking, it is a bad guide to policy and frequently has disastrous results. It is possible, of course, to combine all three errors.
...
This definition, of course, has odd logical consequences: for example, that in a society of billionaires, multimillionaires would be poor. A society in which every single person grew richer could also be one in which poverty became more widespread than before; and one in which everybody grew poorer might be one in which there was less poverty than before. More important, however, is that the redistributionist way of thinking denies agency to the poor. By destroying people’s self-reliance, it encourages dependency and corruption – not only in Britain, but everywhere in the world where it is held."

Hugo Chavez Spearheads Raids as Food Prices Spike

The laws of economics are not optional (w/ apologies to Dr. Thomas Sowell). (pic: Howard Yanes / AP)

Venezuela: Hugo Chavez Spearheads Raids as Food Prices Spike - CNBC: "Mountains of rotting food found at a government warehouse, soaring prices and soldiers raiding wholesalers accused of hoarding: Food supply is the latest battle in President Hugo Chavez's socialist revolution. Venezuelan army soldiers swept through the working class, pro-Chavez neighborhood of Catia in Caracas last week, seizing 120 tons of rice along with coffee and powdered milk that officials said was to be sold above regulated prices. "The battle for food is a matter of national security," said a red-shirted official from the Food Ministry, resting his arm on a pallet laden with bags of coffee. ... Critics accuse him of steering the country toward a communist dictatorship and say he is destroying the private sector. They point to 80,000 tons of rotting food found in warehouses belonging to the government as evidence the state is a poor and corrupt administrator. "

Cigarette Tax May Mean $10 Packs In NYC

When is it enough?

Cigarette Tax Will Mean $10 Packs: "MYFOXNY.COM - Almost $11 for a pack of cigarettes? It might soon become a very real reality in many stores in New York City. The cigarette tax in New York would jump $1.60 a pack under a tentative deal struck between Governor David Paterson and state government leaders. The proposal is part of an emergency budget bill which is due for a vote on Monday. In the city, which levies steep taxes of its own on tobacco products, a pack of cigarettes would come with a tax of $5.85, making it the nation's first city to break $5. The Paterson administration hopes the proposal would generate $440 million in revenue this year, which would be a help close the state budget gap which is estimated to be over $9 billion. Despite the dire budget situation there is no guarantee that the emergency bill will pass after Republicans threatened to vote against a bill that includes tax increases."

Fountain Pens & Writing Updates: Noodler's, Summer Inks, Platinum, & MUCH More

Lost of great pens and writing links today. (picture via our friends at Inkophile)

Pens and Inks for Summer - An Inkophile’s Blog: "For the last two weeks, my pens and inks have taken on summer hues. Inks more than pens but black is a neutral, right?"

16 inks with the blues - lady dandelion: "The last post featured 15 red/red leaning inks. I got so inspired by doing it that I pulled out all my blues – some of them samples provided by kind friends – and made a colour chart. As you see one blue really stands out - Noodler’s Bay State Blue."

Product Spotlight: New Blank Habana Journals from Quo Vadis: "New developments on the Habana front! The small 4x6 3/8″ Habana (which I’ve always referred to as the “Baby” Habana) is new & improved. There is now a blank version available with the 90g Clairefontaine paper – the same paper found in the large version. For the doodlers among us, Wheeee!"

Whatever: Featured Pen - Platinum 3776 Music Nib: "The Platinum Pen Company has been around for a very long time, established in 1919 as Nakaya Seisakusho, the company changed it's name to Platinum Pen Company in 1924. In 1978, the company introduced the model 3776 fountain pen. The '3776' model is named after the height of Mount Fuji, which is 3776 meters tall."

Leaning towards red – 15 inks - lady dandelion: "This started as a red-only colour chart, since I haven’t done that before, but as I made the colour samples I felt I wanted some reference colours, so I added yellow, orange, cerise/pink, purple and a dark blue as references and to make the chart even more tasty ..."

Ink Nouveau: Caran d'Ache Ink Swabs: "I recently started carrying Caran d'Ache bottled ink (I'm a big fan, too), and noticed there were no readily available swabs of the inks! I plan to do more in depth analysis of each of the inks ..."

Calligraphy & tea: An interview with The Archer = Quo Vadis Blog: "Many of you know Clement Dionglay from her blog, Rants of the Archer. I caught up with her recently to ask a few questions about her background, life, and hobbies … Tell us about yourself… where are you from, where do you live, and so on?"

Noodler's Ink Piston Fill Pen Review - The Fountain Pen Network: "What do I expect from a Noodler's Ink fountain pen? First, I expect reliable, regulated flow onto the page from tines that don't touch. Second, I expect good value to have been a design priority. Third, I expect some curb appeal--specifically, a different approach."
