Just How Bad Would A 25% Budget Cut Be?

I don't mean cutting 25% of the expected growth rate, I mean cutting 25% of the current federal government spending.

Let's take a look at the numbers. I grabbed them from here. Below are the numbers from 1980-2011 in both tabular and graphical form.

The 2011 budget is 3,833.86 bln dollars. If we trimmed that 25% right off the top that would bring us to 2875.395 bln dollars. That would still be more than the federal spending from 2007 (2728.94 bln)?! Can anyone confirm if these numbers are correct? I ask as I have a very tough time believing that we can't get by with a federal government the size it was as recently as 2007.

Further, and again going by supplied numbers, a 50% cut would bring us down to 1916.93 bln, which is still more than we spent as recently as 2001 (1863.19 bln)!

Be sure to check out the great analogy re: "freezing spending" from Our Dinner Table.
